Choose the order type#
| Control | What it specifies |
|---|---|
| Limit | A quantity and limit price. Acceptance does not mean the order has filled. |
| Market | An instruction to execute against available liquidity under the exchange’s rules. |
| Conditional / Stop | A trigger condition followed by the configured market or limit action. |
| Post-only | A maker-only condition; an immediately crossing order may be rejected or canceled. |
| Reduce-only | Where supported, restricts the order to reducing an existing position. |
Exact semantics and combinations depend on the venue. For a provider example, see Bybit’s order reference ↗.
Review before submitting#
- Confirm the active account, exchange and instrument.
- Check side, size unit, quantity and price or trigger.
- Review options such as post-only, reduce-only and time in force.
- Submit only when the displayed configuration matches your intention.
- Check Open Orders and Fills for the exchange result.
A market instruction is not a guarantee of a particular price or full execution. A submitted, accepted, partially filled and filled order are different states.
When an order is rejected#
Read the exchange’s response before trying again. Common causes include quantity or price increments, unavailable margin, account mode, permissions and unsupported options.
When a connection times out after submission, inspect existing orders on the exchange before resending. See Orders & fills.
